Everyone designs. Designed By is an exercise in spotting solutions designed by regular people (i.e., non-designers) and refined by an industrial designer, inspired by Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa’s philosophy of designing objects and tools that afford people’s natural behavior rather than interfere with it.

The Philadelphia city flag is a blue-yellow-blue triband to denote the original Swedish settlers. The city’s coat of arms hovers in the yellow strip — its elements include the scales of justice; a seal with a plough and a ship in full sail; two women holding a cornucopia and a scroll; and the motto, “Philadelphia Maneto” or “Let Brotherly Love Continue.”
When you look at our state flags all together, there’s no indication they come from the same nation. Unfortunately this is an accurate representation of where we are right now as a country. (They also break just about every rule of flag design.) As a tribute to the “united-ness” I’d like America to adopt in the future, I embarked on a project to redesign all fifty state flags.
